Women’s basketball: Crookston dominates Park Rapids in defensive battle

PARK RAPIDS – A 25-3 run made the difference as Crookston defeated Park Rapids 40-31 in a defensively-dominated 8AA Section women’s basketball game at the Area High School gymnasium on the Monday January 10.

The Park Rapids defense controlled the first 10 minutes as Tori Weaver and Abby Morris’ 3 points along with a layup and three point play from Anna Yliniemi produced an 11-3 with 10:39 to play in the first half.

Crookston’s defense resumed the remainder of the half. The Halle Winjum jumper at 8:15 started a 16-1 run. Winjum followed with a 3-pointer and joined Emma Osborn, Madison Hoiland and Abby Borowicz with layups as the Pirates had a 19-12 advantage in the break.

Yliniemi rebounded as the Panthers led 21-14 with 15:21 remaining, but Crookston responded to push the lead to 28-14 with 12:59 remaining. Gabi Shepersky sparked a comeback scoring four 3-pointers before another 3-point Weaver reduced the deficit to 34-29 with 3:40 to go. Osborn and Ally Perreault layups took the lead to 40-29 with 46 seconds left before Weaver’s jumper with 35 seconds left to top the score.

Shepersky (12), Weaver (9) and Yliniemi (7) totaled 28 points as the Panthers fell to 2-4 in section games and 3-7 overall.

Winjum’s 18 points led the Pirates, who improved to 4-1 against opponents in the section and 7-2 overall.
