More and more information about the importance of taking time away from your electronics is being released every day. In a world where technology rules our lives and has infiltrated even the most basic daily tasks, it can be so refreshing to take a trip where the focus is not your phone, laptop, or TV screen. If you really want to embrace this break from devices, I would highly recommend booking a trip to a destination where the wi-fi is weak and maybe even not existent. Go even further and plan a getaway with no electricity, something like camping or a safari. When we are forced to take a step back from what normally occupies our attention, it is amazing how much more we notice about the world around us. No matter where you are going, there are a few things you want to remember to pack so you can enjoy yourself.
A Lightweight Bag
Packing minimally is the best way to keep your vacation going smoothly. If you can easily carry everything you are bringing, it will save you a lot of frustration when you have to trek through the jungle to your campsite, or the cobblestone streets prove faulty for your rolling bag. I guess this is more a recommendation about what not to bring, but it is important to remember either way. Don’t bring things you aren’t sure you will use, don’t overpack with outfits and shoes, keep it simple.
A Day to Night Outfit
One of the things that I learned when I was traveling around Mexico is that there may not always be time to go back to the hostel before heading to dinner after exploring all day. This is the reason that I try to pack versatile clothing that can be worn in multiple situations and will be comfortable and appropriate to wear both during the day and at night. Sometimes this means adding a sweater or a belt to go from day to night but those are the types of things you can shove in a backpack and pull out when you are ready to make the transition. My favorite place to shop is PacSun because I can get everything from bathing suits to shorts there and the clothes are always comfortable.
Entertainment for Everyone
Often times when I go on vacation I plan to bring a great book to read in my free time if I am trying to avoid using technology on a trip. This is great and still highly recommended but I also suggest packing something that can be enjoyed with others. If you are on a vacation with friends or family, it can be nice to have a game everyone can play together. On the flip side, if you are traveling alone, a group game can give you a good excuse to talk to strangers and maybe be social with some new friends. I recommend bringing something small like a deck of traditional cards or UNO, other great games like bingo or apples to apples can also be fun with a big group.
